“Service to others is the rent you pay for your room here on Earth.” — Muhammad Ali
“Volunteers don’t get paid, not because they’re worthless, but because they’re priceless.” – Sherry Anderson
“Remember that the happiest people are not those getting more, but those giving more.” ― H. Jackson Brown Jr.
Volunteerism is the lifeblood of Maggie’s Place. We’d be nowhere without our amazing volunteers-not just those in the houses but those that help implement programs, provide food, plan parties, educate and love our moms and babies. Would you be surprised to know it’s not an “all girls club?”
At the 2017 Phoenix Diocese Catholic Men’s Conference, it came to the attention of our Operations Director, Jeff Fuentebella, that men didn’t feel they had many volunteer options at Maggie’s Place. He, and other dedicated men, formed Maggie’s Men just about this time last year.
Maggie’s Men is the men’s volunteer ministry serving Maggie’s Place. Though they may not be in house twenty four hours a day like MissionCorps, they make a big difference. Men from all walks of life came forward to help–from food to home help to organizing at their own churches.
Jeff says its good to have the help. “I know someone is a plumber or a carpenter and I can call on them to help at one of the houses” He stresses that it’s important to get people from all over the community, including men, into the Maggie’s Place family.
He also tells us it’s important to “reintroduce good men into the lives of some of our moms.” Unfortunately, some moms have not had that experience. Maggie’s Men not only demonstrates the spirit of volunteerism but also the reinforcement that wonderful people surround us all the time.
